Apr. 6 – Apr. 13 Update - IFCN WK 71 - Mon- $2,762.05

There were no OneNightStand trades on Friday, Apr. 10. Friday was a holiday in the USA and some places in Europe. The forex markets were open, but with slightly higher bid/ask spreads than usual. Still, there were no trades executed, of which I was glad. Funny things (usually not good) can happen on quasi-holiday trading.

On Monday April 13, 2009 at 00:00 AM CST I exited my short Eur/Usd and Gbp/Usd, and long Usd/Chf positions from the week's FSP trades. The trade prices are shown below.

Week of April 6, 2009---FirststrikePlus trade executions:

  • eur/usd: Short @ 1.3441, exited at 1.3171 for 270 pips profit.
  • gbp/jpy: Short @146.66, stop 149.15.
  • gbp/usd: Short @1.4712, exited at 1.4666 for 46 pips profit.
  • usd/chf: Long @1.1339, exited at 1.1565 for 226 pips profit.
  • usd/jpy: Short @ 99.51, stop 101.12.

OneNightStand trades executed Friday, April 10, 2009:
-None-

Trading account equity: $ 2,130.05
Gain from previous week: $ 86.93

Silver position equity: $ 632.00
(Current XAG price: $12.53 – 400 unit position average: $10.95)
TOTAL Equity: $ 2,762.05

It is nice to see that we had a small but definite gain from the forex trading side, and virtually unchanged equity position from the XAG (silver) side. Perhaps silver is taking a rest before beginning a move back above $13.00.

The market is setting up perfectly for some bigger moves this week. It is mostly a matter of putting in the orders. AND-- putting on the appropriate position sizes.

I'm looking forward to this week.

Mar. 30 – Apr. 6 Update - IFCN WK 70 - Mon- Equity: $ 2,683.12

Quite a challenging week!

A number of readers contacted me to tell me about your great performance last week because you took the long Gbp/Jpy and Usd/Jpy trades. I'm sure you did very well. The Gbp/Jpy especially. Too bad the Challenge account didn't get them too.

Still, the currency trades we did have were quite successful.

On Monday April 6, 2009 at 00:00 AM CST we exited our long Eur/Usd and Gbp/Usd and short Usd/Chf from the previous week FirstStrikePlus trades. Also, we exited our two remaining OneNightStand trades, the long Gbp/Usd and Usd/Jpy. The trade prices are shown below.

Week of March 30, 2009---FirststrikePlus trade executions:
  • eur/usd: Long @ 1.3375, exited at 1.3562 for 187 pips profit
  • gbp/jpy: Short @ 136.47, stopped 138.90 for 242 pip loss.
  • gbp/usd: Long @ 1.4385, exited at 1.4935 for 550 pips profit
  • usd/chf: Short @ 1.1372, exited at 1.1263 for 109 pips profit
  • usd/jpy: Short @ 96.21, stopped at 97.50 for 129 pip loss.
-----
OneNightStand trades executed Friday, April 3, 2009 – exited Monday morning
*Long gbp/jpy @ 147.88, stopped at 146.88 for 100 pip loss.
*Long gbp/usd@ 1.4783. Exited at 1.4935 for 152 pips profit
*Long usd/jpy@ 100.19. Exited at 100.84 for 65 pips profit

Trading account equity: $ 2,043.12
Gain from previous week: $ 154.18

Silver position equity: $ 640.00
(Current XAG price: $12.55 – 400 unit position average: $10.95)
TOTAL Equity: $ 2,683.12

This week turned out better than I thought it would considering the serious drop in XAG (silver) prices. It no doubt will recover on its own timetable. In the meantime, it sure dragged down the total equity.

When silver eventually rallies back up, the additional profits FSP and ONS have been adding to the account will be pretty obvious.

Right now though, it seems like we are robbing Peter to pay Paul.

March 23 - 30 update -IFCN WK 69 - Mon- Equity: $2,836.94

On Monday March 30, 2009 at 00:00 AM CST we exited FSP trades from the previous week's entries: short the Eur/Usd and long the Usd/Chf. The total equity below is from 00:00 AM- Monday morning.

Shortly after the open the Usd/Jpy long trade got stopped out at 96.21, the short entry price for the new week's FSP trade.

Week of March 23, 2009---FirststrikePlus trade executions:
  • gbp/jpy: Long @ 140.94, stopped out at 138.90 for 204 pip loss
  • gbp/usd: Long @ 1.4727, stopped out at 1.4426 for 301 pip loss.
  • usd/jpy: Long @ 97.77. Trade exited 3/30/09 at 96.21 for loss of 156 pips
  • eur/usd: Short @ 1.3405, exited at 1.3232 for 173 pip profit.
  • usd/chf: Long @ 1.1455, exited at 1.1466 for 11 pip profit.
-----
OneNightStand trades for Friday, March 27, 2009
-None-

Trading account equity: $1,888.94
Loss from previous week: $ 43.20

Silver position equity: $ 948.00
(Current XAG price: $13.32 – 400 unit position average: $10.95)
TOTAL Equity: $2,836.94

Losing on both the FSP trades and equity from XAG caused a sizable drop in total equity. That is what drawdowns are made of. We can expect more of the same since we've had such large increases in previous weeks.

We soldier on.

Positions Maintain Status Quo! -IFCN Wk 48 – Fri- $1,554.20

Another choppy week due to the forex markets trying to resume more normal volatility. There are potential profits from this week's current trades, but nothing to stir the imagination. We can expect to get greater profits after the markets get closer to “normal”. When smaller weekly volatility becomes typical again we will be able to trade larger size. Then some decent profits can accrue when a trend week develops.

This week's action was close to a wash. Which is appropriate since there was very little major action in the currencies, just a lot of to-and-fro with news of the election sifting through everyone's consciousness.

Next week could be a trend week. I'm ready.

Here's last week's Friday recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Nov. 7, 2008:

Start of week equity: $1,558.01

Current FSP/ONS trade equity is: $1,424.20

Special Silver long position:
Silver position equity: $130.00
(Current XAG price: $10.05 – 200 unit position average: $9.40)
Weekly total XAG position equity gain: (+$50.00)

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $1,554.20
Total Loss for Week: $ 3.81
(0.2 % weekly decrease)
-----

Despite large apparent losses (pip-wise) in the the FirstStrike Plus trades, remember that the positions have been so small that they are really minor-- usually less than .5% per pair, sometimes much less.

That is the benefit of having the FSP method key off recent volatility. When the previous weekly range is small, then a small move can profit us handsomely. When the previous week's range is large, the latent risk tends to diminish.

Pretty Good Week! -IFCN Wk 47 – Fri- $1,558.01

Not too bad! I thought a number of times that this week might not be so good, but finally the XAG (silver) position helped push up the weekly numbers. There may be more of that in the future too.

Here's last week's Friday recap:

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $1,558.01
Total Gain for Week: $ 129.65
(9.0 % weekly increase)

This was a good week considering the high volatility we've had to deal with. I wouldn't be surprised if we get profits out of most of the remaining FirstStrike Plus trades.

The Las Vegas London Squeeze workshop on Nov. 1st was a great success! All 11 who attended were exceptional people and I've no doubt will be able to improve their trading results. Just in time. The “Magnificent Seven” -the original class who learned the method- have reported strong gains recently. The diversified markets that we're seeing after the plunges have been exploited handily by London Squeeze.

Have a good next week.

Historically Profitable Week! -IFCN Wk 46 – Fri - $1,428.36

In 25 years of currency trading, I do not remember a week like this one.

Even tempering my risk tremendously this last week--- the IFCN Challenge Account has done extremely well with the straight-line moves in most all of the currency pairs favoring the dollar and yen.

It turned out to be a great week to be trading FirstStrike Plus. If we were still trading the original FirstStrike model of 50 pips added to/subtracted from the open with 60 pip stops and only taking the first trade, a couple of the big winners wouldn't have been taken. When volatility increases, it is best to have a method that adjusts automatically with that volatility. Even if the distance to the stop is a larger number than you would prefer.

Fortunately, with firms like Oanda allowing you to tailor your risk to as little as you want with incredibly small position sizes, having a 171 pip stop on the Eur/Usd is not a problem-- 1% risk of a $1200 account is $12.00. 700 units of Eur/Usd or .07 cents/pip x 171=$11.97 . So the profit of 562 pips this week in the Euro translated to $39.34. Not bad at all for the risk involved.

With the extended moves of Friday, it is obvious that coming out on Thursday was detrimental to potential profits from the FirstStrike Plus trades. I still would do the same thing again in a future situation due to extreme volatility. With frequent oscillations of hundreds of points up or down in minutes regardless of currency pair, being in any forex trade became more of a gamble than a reasonable strategic speculation.

By Monday morning's open we will see the opportunity cost for the decision. It could be substantial. Nevertheless, we currently have winning OneNightStand trades to exit on Monday morning.

Here's last week's Friday recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Oct. 24, 2008:

Total Gain for Week: $ 221.26
(18.3% weekly increase)

This was a very good week. I have gotten a number of emails from IFCN watchers/traders who have had 25% to 100% gains this week due to the FirstStrikePlus trades. I'm very happy for you.

Extraordinary markets make for extraordinary profits. No doubt there will be those who think these results are just due to chance. Research, and trading a very small account with real money at Oanda should help with those beliefs.

On to next week.....

Best wishes, and thanks for all the great notes of appreciation.

(Side note: Since profitable trading is usually accomplished due to some exploitation of human behavior, I am always interested in quirks of human nature. Please read the following:
Aoccdrnig to rcecnet rsecearh, it deosnt mttaer waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, olny taht the frist and lsat leettr be in the rghit pclae. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe!)

Interesting! Perhaps someone can figure out how to profit from this kind of tendency?

This is the last week we will be reporting on regular FirstStrike trades. (Fixed 50 pip breakouts above/below the week's open) Next week we will be using FirstStrike Plus, a volatility-responsive FirstStrike model.

Here's last week's Friday recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Oct. 17, 2008:

Start of week equity: $1,205.35

Current trade equity is: $ 1,218.10

Special Silver long position:
Silver position equity: (-$11.00 )
(Current XAG price: $9.39 – 100 unit position average: $9.50)
(Weekly total XAG position equity gain: (-$11.00)

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $ 1,207.10
Total Gain for Week: $ 1.75
(0.1% weekly increase)

I'm getting ready for next week's start of FirstStrike Plus. The trading methodology should be better able to profit when weekly volatility is excessive -- as we are currently experiencing. As I mentioned a week ago, I had originally planned on releasing it after the first year anniversary of the IFCN trading challenge. Since the markets are dealing us their toughest, it is best to advance to meet it with the best tools.

The potential for profit is better too. Persevere through the wild rides the dollar is providing right now. The crazy moves can't last forever, even though it seems like it when you're in the market.

Still Alive! IFCN Wk 44 – Fri – Equity $1,205.35

Volatility concerns have encouraged me to make a change that I had planned to implement after the IFCN celebrated its first anniversary. That change is to introduce a version of FirstStrike that automatically adapts its buy/sell prices to the current volatility of the market.

The original version has worked well for the last 10 months, but with no idea of when the increased market activity will subside – I am issuing the ruleset for FirstStrike Plus which I will be using from next Monday forward in the Challenge account. You can obtain it from this link....

Here's last week's (Delayed) recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Oct. 10, 2008:

(Weekly total XAG position equity loss: $58.00.)

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $1,205.35

Total Loss for Week: $60.27 (4.8% weekly decrease)

What an incredible week! We saw a huge peak to valley equity swing – at one point unrealized equity was $1552, much of that from XAG profits – which then disappeared when an over-leveraged hedge fund had to dump its cargo on Friday without any elegance whatsoever. There went our profits and a 22% drawdown completed in less than 12 hours.

Trading with high leverage is what causes the following axiom to be repeated forever – big positions create big problems....

As this recap was delayed, it is obvious that the stock and forex markets have stood their ground on Monday and are putting in a good showing.

We're in for the ride. The rest of the week will show us how big that ride might get.

Have a good evening.

The Week's Silver Bullet! IFCN Wk 43 – Fri- Equity: $1,265.62

Quite a week. We had great results with two of our FirstStrike trades, a result which is always welcome.

We had extremely negative results in our XAG, or silver trades. That doesn't mean that buying silver is bad, but it means that there is a lot of market action that must be withstood until visible trends resume.

As we've seen many times in the past, tradable trends can appear seemingly from nowhere, and definitely on their own timetable.

Here's the week's recap:

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $ 1,265.62
Total Loss for Week: $202.45 (13.7% weekly decrease)

I am constantly reminded of the true, old saying, “Live by the sword, die by the sword.” When you have highly leveraged positions, you get large changes in profits and losses. The silver trades were shining proof of that effect this week in the loss column.

Ironically, the moves – and the losses in the challenge account are directly attributed to other highly leveraged positions held by banks that have been forcing them to exit dissimilar markets (crude oil hedge funds) chaotically which affect other markets like silver (as part of the product baskets held by the hedge funds).

Next week should be equally tumultuous.

Fear Profits! IFCN Wk 42 – Fri- Equity: $1468.07

We had a pretty good week with all of the news and fear setting hold of the forex markets. We are definitely not done with volatility. I've been very impressed with how well the Challenge account has been doing despite the whipsaws we're seeing every day.

Silver has held in there like a champ. We gained some more on our little 100 oz. XAG trade. I wouldn't be surprised if we had a small drop into next week. We've had a strong push up, it would be reasonable for the market to see how strong metal holders really are. Of course that could cause a serious drop in equity, but that is the nature of higher leveraged positions. Under the right circumstances I could see adding a little more to the existing silver position.

Here's the week's recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Sept. 26, 2008:

Start of week equity: $ 1341.49

OneNightStand Exit(s) on 09/22/08 :

Silver Equity weekly gain: $78.00.

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $1,468.07

It was another good week for the IFCN Challenge account. There is still a lot of paranoia in the financial system. Expect to see a lot of swinging moves for a few weeks until Europe figures out where it stands in the financial crises going on.

See you Monday.

Dollar Finally Gets Chance to Prove how Strong It Really Is! IFCN Wk 41 –Fri– Equity: $1341.49

This was a very good week. Any week you can survive financially intact with extreme divergent motion is a raging success.

FirstStrike held its own despite losing on 4 of the 5 entries with a small overall loss because of diminished size on the Gbp/Jpy winning trade.

A bright spot was the IFCN silver purchase of 100 units (ounces) of silver at 10.75. The trade was indeed fortunate in timing. It should be a great trade even if I had entered $.50 to $1.00 higher.

No OneNightStand trades got triggered Friday, thank goodness.

Here's the week's recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Sept. 19, 2008:

Start of week equity: $1,174.29

OneNightStand Exit(s) on 09/15/08 :
-None-
Total Profit: $ 0.00.

Completed FirstStrike trades this week:
-Eur/Usd: Long @ 1.4439, stopped out at 1.4379 for a 60 pip loss.
-Gbp/Jpy: Short @ 190.21, stopped out at 187.36 for a 285 pip profit. (50% Trail option)
-Gbp/Usd: Long @ 1.8086, stopped out at 1.8026 for a 60 pip loss.
-Usd/Chf: Short @ 1.1090, stopped out at 1.1150 for a 60 pip loss.
-Usd/Jpy: Short @ 105.38, stopped out at 105.98 for a 60 pip loss.
Total losses: 240 pips
Total profits: 285 pips
Net gain: 45 pips ($11.80) Dollar loss due to smaller position on higher risk Gbp/Jpy trade

OneNightStand 08/29/08 entry(s):
-None-

End of week systems' equity: $1,162.49 (includes unrealized P&L)

(Special Silver long position: 100 oz. @ 10.75 on 9/17/08. Stoploss @ 10.25. Friday close @12.54.) Silver Equity gain: $179.00.

WEEK'S TOTAL EQUITY: $1341.49
Total Gain for Week: $167.20 (14.2% weekly increase)

We'll see if the bad news tapers down next week. The IFCN account is now up 168% in just 41 weeks, or 213% annualized. That could cut a couple years off the trade time to my goal.

We enjoy the good times but are always wary.  Difficult times are never that far away when you are a trader. You only have to wait a little while.

Rock - Roll! - IFCN Wk 40 – Fri – Equity: $1,174.29

To say we had a volatile week is the largest understatement possible. We had gigantic profits by Thursday on all of our trades, as anyone knows who took this week's FirstStrike trades.

If we had gotten out at the maximum point of profit on each of our trades, we would have been up more than $350 dollars – or 31.8% for the week, a truly huge percentage gain for just one week. As it was, we ended up only 6% higher than last week. Profitable, but not earth-shaking. I still will take those profits over losses any day.

-50% Trailing Stop Revisted-

In the past I introduced you to the idea that when gains are outsized early in the week – you can adopt a simple trailing stop strategy that originated in the trading pits. The moment profits become larger than a certain size, such as 300 pips in a trade, you can protect half of the existing profits on a trailing basis.

For example: the week's short Gbp/Jpy trade had 835 pips of profit at 10:00 AM on Thursday. Using the 50% trailing point after we had 300 pips in profit would have trapped at least 417 pips in profit for the week. As it was, holding until Friday's close only garnered 103 pips.

Where this trailing setup loses out is situations where the market makes large reversal swings, stops you out and then goes on the same direction it did previously and you lose out on even larger profits. There are trade-offs for using or nor using all trailing strategies, and losing large potential profits like we did this week was a great example.

The 50% trailing strategy can be a benefit in markets like we saw this week, but by no means all market types. How can you tell the difference? Good question. If you can't, don't use it.

Still, it was a profitable week and we are at a new equity high We are up 134% since Dec. 2007.

We had no OneNightStand trades this week. I'm just as glad, because it was inevitable that the dollar would have to correct sometime. Since it obviously started a retracement today, I'm glad it didn't hook the ONS trades and then reverse the way it did.

Anyone who took the trades this week and held to the bitter end has my admiration and respect. It took character to give up profits that have a tendency to beckon to you and beg you to take them.

Looking forward to next week.

Forex trading Homeruns! --IFCN Wk 39 -Fri- Equity: $1104.38

Another great week!

Straight-line forex moves the past weeks helped the Challenge account make a 161% annualized return since I began trading it in December of 2007!

OneNightStand and FirstStrike did great this week. Not bad for a couple of simple but robust trading methods. Of course, some may think that luck plays a large part in abnormal returns, but I have found that it usually is more a situation of inevitable market opportunities meeting a prepared trader.

When the forex markets start making large moves continuously and seemingly unpredictably, the majority of participants are unprepared for the increased volatility. Those traders who have methods which can reap profits from that kind of volatility only need to reliably execute to receive their share.

I must admit in my own case, trading for 2 decades-- it's not been my cleverness that has brought me the greatest profits. It has been my willingness to execute thousands of trades that seemed lackluster in potential that turned into valuable positions. The trades became special properties from which I was able to receive additional value by holding just a little longer than others for greater than average profits.

The extra value I received could not have happened had I not entered in the first place. That said, I missed one trade this week, right at the end. It's mentioned in the recap.

Here's the week's recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Sep. 05, 2008:

Start of week equity: $978.83

OneNightStand Exit(s) on 09/01/08 :
*Gbp/Usd: Short @ 1.8239 – Exited at 1.8031 for 208 pips profit.
*Gbp/Jpy: Short @ 199.60 – Exited at 1.9568 for 392 pips profit.
Total Profits: $ 52.19. (Increase of $40.39 from Friday's close)

Completed FirstStrike trades this week:
  • Eur/Usd: Short @ 1.4584, – Exited at 1.4235 for 349 pips profit.
  • Gbp/Jpy: Short @ 194.93, – Exited at 189.04 for 589 pips profit.
  • Gbp/Usd: Long @ 1.8080, stopped out at 1.8020 for a 60 pip loss.
  • Usd/Chf: Short @ 1.0979, stopped out at 1.1039 for a 60 pip loss.
  • Usd/Jpy: Short @ 108.03, stopped out at 108.63 for a 60 pip loss.
Total losses: 180 pips
Total profits: 938 pips
Net profit: 758 pips ($94.94 net gain.)

OneNightStand 09/05/08 entry(s):
*Eur/Usd: Short @ 1.4211, exited at 1.4306 for 95 pip loss.
Total ONS losses: $ - 9.78

End of week equity: $1,104.38 (includes unrealized P&L, if any)
Total Gain for Week: $125.55 (12.8% weekly increase)

If I took the OneNightStand trades perfectly this week, I would have bought the Usd/Chf trade @ 1.1182. It happened in the last 15 minutes of the day and my order had already expired an hour before. I didn't notice the price going higher or I would've had to execute it. I might be missing out on a profitable trade, but errors do happen to all of us.

We cannot afford to make many.

Lookout Below! Falling Pound – Part 2!--IFCN Wk 38 -Fri- Equity: $978.83

I was quite surprised at the action of the British pound last Friday. The falling to new lows after 2 weeks of waterfall action was an example of extreme weakness. This week's repeat of new lows shows incredibly weak action.

This week, the Gbp/Usd didn't fall as much, but this Friday it acted much like a week ago, falling to new lows and triggering a OneNightStand sell trade. The pound was also very weak versus the Yen, so the Gbp/Jpy ONS trade got triggered for an even bigger profit by Friday's close. We are holding those trades over until Monday morning to exit as per the ruleset.

It is good to see more OneNightStand trades getting executed. They are high probability trades and are “invisible” to the mainstream trading world.

-----

We had quite the week in the FirstStrike trade camp. I was beginning to wonder if we were ever going to see the Usd/Jpy fall and stay down until our exit at the end of Friday's trading.

Because it did indeed fall AND I had additional size placed on the trade as detailed over the last few days – the Challenge account profited handsomely.

(To reiterate briefly; because I saw a very low risk situation in the Usd/Jpy FirstStrike trade I placed a much larger position on it, while willing to accept an additional 2% risk to the account. The trade worked out and the account has leaped to new equity highs.)

This week's beneficial profits came from a strong personal understanding of the FirstStrike weekly trading concept. Or luck, as some others will see it.

Of course, the unrealized profits from the two short ONS trades also contributed positively to my week's closing bottom line.

-----

Here's the week's recap:

The data below is as of Friday's close, Aug. 29, 2008:

Start of week equity: $814.41

  • Gbp/Jpy: Long @ 203.61, stopped out at 202.71 for a 90 pip loss.

Total losses: 270 pips
Total profits: 82 pips
Net loss: 188 pips ($145.02+) Profit from the jumbo Usd/Jpy trade

OneNightStand 08/29/08 entry(s):

*Gbp/Usd: Short @ 1.8511
*Gbp/Jpy: Short @ 199.60
The above to be exited Monday morning, 00:01 CST
Unrealized Profits: $ 11.80

End of week equity: $978.83(includes unrealized P&L)

See you next week. Maybe we'll get some profitable action from this volatility.

Lookout Below! Falling Pound!--IFCN Wk 37 -Fri- Equity: $814.41

I was quite surprised at the action of the British pound on Friday. I wasn't surprised at the pound falling after having a small correction, but plummeting to new lows for the move – putting in 2 year lows – was amazing!

And the OneNightStand trade in the pound got triggered! After all the conflagration witnessed in the currency markets recently, this was an extreme move by anyone's measure.

As of 2005, Warren Buffett was widely proclaimed as one of the foremost traders who had been betting against the dollar since 2002. His view was that widening US deficits and diminishing trade would drop the value of the dollar. Apparently his view has changed.

Comments on Friday which stated that Mr. Buffett had no further bets against the dollar encouraged some to jump on the dollar's side. He also said U.S. stocks were much more attractive than they were a year ago.

Trader's coppering his bets better be ready for a rough ride. Even though the dollar will likely gain some more, there could be some dangerous volatility with that kind of news coming out.

I do believe that U.S. realestate, stocks, businesses, etc. are grossly undervalued relative to world values. Especially considering the future potential of technologies that reside here.

That doesn't mean anyone immediately cares about your inexpensive house in a great neighborhood when their own house is burning down, regardless of neighborhood.

The fire?

Some flames about the British economy appeared on Friday, and hence the value of the Sterling-- were tainted by the fact that Britain's GDP actually was unchanged in the second quarter when all the previous estimates were for increased growth.

Also, the general consensus is growing that the European Central bank could be lowering interest rates very soon.

Just a thought..., imagine how bad Britains and Europeans must feel about their economies when the well-publicized economic ills of the U.S. are taking a backseat to their own?

Next week will show us how negative the feelings are for the European currencies.

Olympic Strength!--IFCN Wk 36 -Fri- Equity: $841.14.

The dollar's strength continued all week. If the currency's performance this week were in the Olympics, the dollar would have been the uncontested winner in every event.

Most in the financial world attributed much of it to the instability of the former Soviet Union made obvious by fresh news of continued fighting. Perhaps.

The news is fickle and loves to attribute one trouble to another. It likes to make a tidy package. The reality is likely closer to this concept-- the US economy isn't and hasn't been as bad as the news about it trumpeted over the last many months, and the rest of the world has over emphasized how much better they've had it. Reality eventually rights all things.

For a few years in the late '80's, the “civilized” world believed that Japan would own the world because of the Japanese economy's undaunting strength. At the time, the Japanese property valuation of Tokyo alone exceeded by a large margin the total American valuation of every square inch of property in the US!

Eventually, reality caught up with the imaginary valuations and fixed the irrational views by sending losses to the deluded.

This is the way of free markets. They tend to be wrong long enough to allow the very gullible to own the worse values. The word to the wise is – don't allow yourself to be gullible.

2 + 2 always equals 4.

It would have been great if the account could have retaken some of the FirstStrike trades when they “re-Struck” to the downside. We would have doubled the account easily.

With markets like this for a while, anything is possible. Anyone trading viable methods in the shorter terms have had a cornucopia of profit opportunities. Any upticks in the eur/usd and gbp/usd have been good sells for the last week.

We'll see what the next week will bring.

As an additional note, 7 experienced IFCN subscribers attended a workshop this weekend in Minneapolis concerning trading London Squeeze, a robust daily volatility-breakout method that has been effective for decades. It has proved itself effective trading simultaneously with FirstStrike and OneNightStand.

It was a fantastic gathering, with everyone getting a chance to describe their experiences and successes (or lack of success) trading forex. I definitely enjoyed meeting such a determined and intelligent group of traders whom I am confident will excel in coming months.

I'll keep you posted as I hear of their success. Or lack of, as the case may be. Trading is a challenge despite the determination we bring to it.

Looking forward to a new week.

Infiniteyield Forex in Action! New All-Time Equity Highs! --IFCN Wk 35 -Fri- Equity: $869.12

Trading is more a mental game than financial.

There will be no chest-beating from me after such a great week. Those of you who took the FirstStrike and OneNightStand trades this week are very glad they did, and should feel welcome to do a little chest-beating if you feel like it. You deserve it, because you actually took the trades. Those who took the reverse-trade short in the Eur/Usd can buy the drinks this weekend.

Enjoy those good feelings as much as you can, because the simple truth is the good feelings never feel good enough to eradicate the negative feeling experienced when undergoing the continuous psychological drain brought on by months of losses.

My simple summation of the week, “It's about time!”

Profiting as a professional trader comes down to taking your trades and holding on to the winners as long as they keep going your way. How one accomplishes this mission is part of the journey.

After this week's action, many who've just watched from the sidelines as FirstStrike was successful in so many of the pairs can see how it is actually TIME that makes the large profits possible from proper currency speculation. The only thing that stopped the Euro and the Pound from falling further this week was Friday's closing bell.

This action made it possible for FirstStrike and OneNightStand to profit mightily from the one-way markets.

If we had not been stopped out prematurely on the Usd/Jpy and the quick, errant long trade in the Eur/Usd, we would have had a HUGE week in the Alpha account. As it was, I still had some decent size on for the Gbp/Usd and Usd/Chf trades. The ONS trades today were simply the topping on the cake.

Even I was surprised as to how profitable the ONS trades were today. It goes to show that even experienced traders can underestimate the strength of panic and disappointment in large capital markets. That is why we tend to follow our own rules quite studiously – we know that the emotions of fear or greed can overwhelm the logic that we base our profit centers on.

Last week I touched on the “majority” rule: When the majority of a market's participants finally realize a new trend is present, you are likely at the midpoint of the move. I am certain that the majority have finally figured that there is a new trend in the currencies now, and they just found out for sure – today!

I was a beginning trader once too. I know that many who entered early in the week took profits after a couple of days in their favor, just because they've experienced so many losses in the past weeks. Only a few of you were able to resist taking the large profits available by Wednesday that paled into insignificance by Friday.

If any of you actually had good success from taking the trades this week, I would love to hear from you. Please send me an email.

I've already heard from one serious trader whose short Eur/Usd entry order (reverse trade) wasn't filled at all on Oanda. The jury is still out how they're going to handle the out-trade. It is markets like these that really test traders and the systems they trade on. I experienced no difficulties, but maybe others have....

I would love to share some of your feedback (no identifying material will ever be transmitted) with others so people can see the normal human thought processes that need to be modified.

  • Eur/Usd: Long @1.5627, stopped out at 1.5571 for a 56 pip loss.
  • Gbp/Jpy: Short @211.98, stopped out at 212.88 for a 90 pip loss.
  • Gbp/Usd:Short @1.9686, exited Friday at 1.9202 for 484 pip profit.
  • Usd/Chf: Long @ 1.0530, exited Friday at 1.0808 for 278 pip profit.
  • Usd/Jpy: Long @108.30, stopped out at 107.70 for a 60 pip loss.
Total losses: 206 pips
Total profits: 762 pips
Net profits: 556 pips

OneNightStand 08/08/08 entry(s):
*Eur/Usd: Short @ 1.5192
*Gbp/Usd: Short @ 1.9269
*Usd/Chf: Long @ 1.0714
*Usd/Jpy: Long @ 109.89
All above to be exited Monday morning, 00:01 CST
Unrealized Profits: $ 27.60

End of week equity: $869.12 (includes unrealized P&L)
Total Gain for Week: $187.91 (27.5% weekly increase)

This was admittedly a great week.

I didn't lose very much on the long Eur/Usd FirstStrike trade as it was only placed with minimal size. The Gbp/Jpy loss was not great either, but the Usd/Jpy was a full sized loss.

Nevertheless, the large Gbp/Usd and Usd/Chf trades were in markets that appeared to be on a mission. My only regret is that I didn't get on a Eur/Usd reverse trade. That would have been great, but it doesn't pay to get greedy.

As I stated last week and numerous times in the past, the way one profits from trading is by having substantial size on substantial winners.

Now that the world is totally aware of the Dollar trend change, trading may get more difficult again. Or not.

We'll see.

See you next week.

Dollar Strength Now Obvious- to Some! --IFCN Wk 34 -Fri- Equity: $681.21.

An old rule for trading goes like this: When the majority of
participants finally realize a new trend is present, you are
likely at the midpoint of the move. I have seen the
ramifications of this rule played out countless times, in
futures, stocks and definitely the currencies.

I'm not absolutely sure that the majority of participants
realize a new trend starting in favor of the dollar yet, but
most active participants of the market are beginning to fear
being short the dollar for any period of time. Especially
those who have been royally faked-out by news reports this week.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Eur/Usd getting down to the
146 – 147 level before the end of the year. It has increased
vs. the dollar for a very long time. Every bull/bear market
gets overdone. Even if the Eur/Usd has farther to go in the
future, nothing fatal to the major trend will happen if it has
a shorter-term retracement for while.

I don't attempt to predict what will happen, but I allow myself
to anticipate what is most likely to happen.

I would rather be the one surprising the masses instead of being
the one surprised!

Before anyone sends me emails on how was it possible to gain on
a theoretically losing week, there is only the truth:

I had substantially more size on the winning Usd/Chf trade than
on my losing trades. The losers had less initial position size
than normal. My position-sizing algorithm was responsible for
the strong deviations in both cases.

As I've stated numerous times in the past, the way one profits from
trading is by having substantial size on your substantial winners.

Which worked out fine this week. The dramatic improvement in
return from my money management is rarely this dramatic.

I look forward to next week.

Holding the Course Not for Wimps! --IFCN Wk 33 -Fri- Equity: $675.94.

It takes a great deal of character to take trades over and over again which end up losing.

A perfect example was this last week. After a series of 4 weeks with marginal profits or actual losses, we came into last week and immediately were slammed with 5 losses.

I got a small net profit from a pair of uncancelled reverse trades that did little to stem the onslaught.

Remembering that this is a numbers game gets difficult if all you've been experiencing recently is losses.

Colonel Sanders as an old man spent two years driving across the United States looking for restaurants to buy his chicken recipe. He was turned down 1,009 times before someone finally accepted his deal and history began to be written....

That doesn't mean that we want to or have to wait till we are old to "finally" succeed, but strings of losses aren't very encouraging either.

Persistence ultimately rules, but does it have to take so long? We'll see!

The reverse trades as a group had a small positive addition, but were far from a resounding profit.

The forex markets are madly trying to make sense of all the conflicting news tossed at them every few days. Being reactive only creates potential for greater losses.

Have a good evening.

I intend to live forever, or die trying.
